Location

Valentine Cottage is located in ‘Old Lyme’ at the bottom of Silver Street, close to the top of the main high street in Lyme Regis. The location is perfect to enjoy the benefits of the nearby shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs.

There’s short cuts to the beach and the beach hut through Langmore Gardens which has breath-taking views of Lyme Bay; and you can be on the sand in as little as five minutes. So Valentine Cottage with the beach hut is a perfect holiday choice for those wanting to visit the beach everyday.

The cottage is also great as a base for those of you wanting to walk the famous Undercliff or explore the Jurassic Coastline. Lyme Regis is famous for its fossils and the cottage is not far from the beaches at the further east and west ends of the town where the best fossils can be found.

Great bus services run across Dorset connecting Lyme Regis daily to Axminster (where the nearest train station is located), Exeter, Bridport and Weymouth. From Axminster there are regular trains to London Waterloo and Exeter and beyond.

Lyme Regis

Explore the town…

Lyme Regis is a small coastal town, located close to the county border, and is an ideal location to explore Dorset and Devon from.  The coastline around Dorset and East Devon is awesome, and it has recently been awarded World Heritage site status, offering walkers some breath-taking views and challenging terrain. However, there are also plenty of attractions  in the town – a day in our beach hut, a mackerel fishing trip from the Cobb Harbour, a visit to the Marine Aquarium, Lyme Regis Museum or the Dinosaur Museum, a guided fossil hunt on the beach, touring the art galleries, enjoying a live show or movie at the Marine Theatre, or a game of crazy golf. In the summer there’s a Jazz Festival, Fossil Festival, Carnival Week and Lifeboat Week.

There are sandy, shingle, beach-combing and famous fossil-hunting beaches in Lyme Regis; as well as rock pools, safe swimming and many water sports including  sailing, wind-surfing and water skiing. The famous harbour at the Cobb is home to both working fishing boats and leisure vessels.

And enjoy the food…

Lyme Regis is gaining an excellent regional reputation with foodies. In the town overlooking the Cobb Harbour is the Hix Oyster House, and there’s a new wave of great pubs and restaurants throughout the town, as well as a handful of takeaway restaurants. Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen is close by in Axminster, just 15 minutes away by car; and the famous Hive Beach Café at Burton Bradstock is just the other side of Bridport.

If you enjoy cooking, Lyme Regis has its own fishmongers down at the Cobb Harbour, a cheesemonger and bakery close to the Town Mill. There also some great independent delis and grocery stores stocking local Lyme Bay produce. For everyday grocery shopping there’s a small Tescos and Co-op.

We have an up to date list of our favourite spots, as well as contributions from recent guests, which we are very happy to share with visitors and can be found in the guest book in the cottage.
